Team Great Britain athlete and world champion in duathlon Emma Pallant understands the importance of a good night's sleep in not only winning today but staying on top of your game for the long haul. 

HOW TO SLEEP BETTER TO PERFORM BETTER

Sleeping better is one of the fastest ways to perform better in sports and in life. However, many athletes don't sleep as well as they should and need to. Emma explains: 

"Sleep routine is super key for me. I have never been a good sleeper, always hyperactive and wanting to move around, its great for an athlete in someways but then when you find it hard to relax and sleep it’s detrimental to performance because I know first hand how much it can hinder recovery."

Emma has learned to work around her high energy to still get the amount of sleep she needs to perform: 

"So I am someone who really needs to pay attention to the small details on how to facilitate sleep because its something that doesn’t come naturally to me.  Athletes that I coach manage to often have power naps and I see how much this improves their performance and likewise if they have a spell of bad sleep it always leads to a detriment in their health. So as an advocate of good sleep I go to quite a few lengths to try and improve the hours and quality that i get in my general tips are caffeine timing, breathing before bed, tracking device, company, routine, early nights and now equipment too with the nightwear that i am sleeping in, Dagsmejan."

THE TIME YOU SPEND IN BED DETERMINE WHAT TIME YOU FINISH THE RACE

Contrary to what some people believe to sleep is not to waste time, it's to invest it wisely to ensure that you have the pay-off and end-result you are looking for. As Emma puts it;

"In general I will try and make sure i get eight hours sleep a night and this is real sleep, I use my polar watch to track it and it often means nine hours in bed to get eight hours of quality sleep. I also will try to have a 20 mins black out in the day where possible before 2pm because power naps can make the third session of the day so much better in quality. Then before a race nothing will change, i find the better the pattern I get my body into then the easier it is too hold, even when I am training less into a race."
