Dagsmejan is excited to enter the next phase of the interdisciplinary sleep research project with our esteemed research partners EMPA and HSLU. By examining the different components of a great night’s sleep we can not only sleep better but also live better. EMPA is home to some 1,000 scientists, engineers, technicians, and general staff, making it a world-renowned research institute for innovation in materials science and technology. Founded in 1877, the Lucerne School of Art and Design today offers strong expertise in research and development in textile, making it one of Switzerland's leading providers of degree programmes in art and design.

This second phase of the project follows on the first phase where the focus was on truly understanding our physiological sleep needs and how we can sleep better and longer with the right materials and design. The research project started by mapping out our sleep patterns with the aid of sleep physicians to understand how our temperature, moisture and movement shifts during the night.

Optimal Sleep Temperature

Temperature is imperative for our sleep quality and has an even bigger influence than light. To fall asleep our core temperature needs to drop and if we can’t remain in the ideal climatic zone during the night our sleep quality will suffer.

In a nationwide poll in Germany 2017 being too warm or too cold was the most commonly named disturbing factor for a good night’s sleep impacting 38% of women and 44% of men.

Further complicating the situation is the fact that our bedrooms are about 5ºC warmer now than in 1971 as a result of the increased use of central heating and home insulation. Though this is comfortable during the day it can decrease our sleep quality during the night if we can’t release excess heat.

Managing our skin temperature is the driving force behind managing core body temperature and improving sleep quality.

Sweating is the body’s key tool for thermoregulation, however, the result is sometimes a restless sleep. Our body on average contains 60% water and we have 4 million sweat glands to be able to manage heat and temperature increases. We lose up to 2.5 liters of fluid every day.

We sweat on average one cup every night which with the wrong materials can lead to uncomfortable wetness on our skin. 

Through the first phase of the research project, we managed to find the right man-made natural fibers, enhanced by a patented finishing technology that gives unique moisture wicking properties and thermoregulation. We combined that with advanced functional knitting technology for high breathability, ergonomic fit, and super-soft touch.
